NHS England has announced that extra NHS dental services will be available for patients in Portsmouth affected by the closure of three dental surgeries.

Following an intervention by Healthwatch Portsmouth NHS dental treatment is now available at Bupa Dental Care, 90 Northern Road, Cosham PO6 3E. Discussions are also underway with the University Dental Academy in Portsmouth with a view to providing NHS care for patients in Portsmouth city. NHS England will write to former patients of the closed dental surgeries giving details of the new services shortly.

In June Colloseum Dental Services announced that they were closing three Dental surgeries in Portsmouth offering NHS appointments: in Paulsgrove, at the John Pounds Centre in Portsmouth and in Southsea.

Following this announcement we contacted NHS England, which is responsible for funding and arranging NHS dental care, and asked about plans for replacement services. We were told that a full procurement process would have to be undertaken for replacement dental services. This would be finished, at the earliest, by April 2020. We asked about interim arrangements for patients affected and are pleased to hear that the new services are available for affected patients as above.

Update: 8 August 2019
Further to the announcement last week that NHS England would provide additional appointments at the dental surgeries which had agreed to take on new NHS patients we have learned through feedback that the appointments offered at Bupa Dental Care surgery in Cosham, have already be taken up and no new NHS appointments are available at this surgery.  Healthwatch Portsmouth is asking about this at a meeting with NHS England that we are attending today.
