Whats your experience of booking appointments online?

Do you use your Doctors’ surgery website to book appointments? Did everything turn out  as you expected when you turned up for your appointment?

We receive lots of feedback here at Healthwatch Portsmouth about difficulties people have in booking appointments over the phone – frequently people find it hard to get in touch with phone lines constantly engaged.

In an effort to relieve this problem many GP surgeries across the city have added online appointment booking which should in theory allow patients to select a convenient time to see their Doctor or nurse with a minimum of fuss. According to NHS England data almost 14 million people across England and Wales are registered with their Doctor to book appointments online so it seems that people value this ease and convenience

However we have heard of problems in this system with patients turning up at the booked appointment time only to find that the surgery had no record of the appointment booking meaning that they couldn’t see the Doctor or nurse as they expected..
