Part 1
This is a report on what people have said are the challenges that they are facing in the city. This report is the product of a joint research project between the University of Portsmouth and Healthwatch Portsmouth, funded by Healthwatch Portsmouth. We asked for people’s experiences of accessing health services, education, housing, good quality employment, support networks and social arrangements. Read the report:
We publicised throughout 2023 the opportunity for Portsmouth residents to tell the university researcher gathering the feedback for us of their experiences and unmet needs. We also asked people for their ideas on the solutions to the problems they spoke about and have included these in the report, together with recommendations offered in the conversations with 18 individuals and one group of 6 people who support residents in deprived areas to access services.
We spoke to people living in deprived areas of Portsmouth, namely Central Portsmouth, Buckland, port and Mile End Industrial Estate, Paulsgate and Paulsgrove. The report includes many quotes from what people told the researcher of what they see the problems as being and what needs to change. We will be inviting Portsmouth residents during 2024 to tell Healthwatch Portsmouth how they think the solutions offered in the report can be achieved in a follow-up activity to this research report.

Part 2
In August and September 2024, Healthwatch Portsmouth devised a plan to gather feedback from Portsmouth residents on how they thought the solutions (appearing in research report part 1 ) could be achieved. We used the following material to help the conversations start:

Graphic showing topics for conversation starters
Here is what we found out from those conversations in late summer '24 with Portsmouth residents.
We presented our findings to the Portsmouth Health and Wellbeing Board Development Session in early November '24.
We will be presenting the Healthwatch Portsmouth findings to the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Integrated Care Partnership Quality Board in January 2025. When we have more news about next steps and outcomes achieved we will post here.
