The do's and don'ts of interacting with the deaf community

It is important to improve understanding around deafness and deaf culture. Find out the do's and don'ts of communicating with a person who is deaf.


Do

  • Wait until the person is looking at you to communicate.

  • Begin the conversation with what you want to talk about.

  • Speak clearly in whole sentences and be ready to repeat yourself if needed.

  • Use your natural facial expressions and hand gestures.

  • Make eye contact.

  • Stand with a light source facing you.


Don't

  • Speak slowly.

  • Shout.

  • Exaggerate facial expressions or mouth movements.

  • Turn away.

  • Cover your face.
